Understanding Tesla Energy’s Powershare Vision: ‘Vehicle to Everything’

V2G (Vehicle to Grid) is taking off and Jumptech is at the forefront of making the technology work as part of a wider energy ecosystem.

At our recent V2G Day event in Cambridge, Tesla Energy Senior Account Manager Jim Rugg told a packed audience the ecosystem can power more than just Electric Vehicles (EVs): “It isn’t just V2G: it’s vehicle to everything.”

Even a giant like Tesla needs expert partners like Jumptech for coordinated delivery so that it can make the most of V2G’s potential.

Our workflow platform is behind thousands of EV, battery and solar installs which support energy and automotive OEM businesses to optimise the full installation journey faster and stay compliant. The technology boosts system interoperability while simplifying the compliance process.

Unlocking grid power with vehicles

Jim used his time on stage to tell delegates from across the sector about Tesla Energy’s holistic V2G strategy, which it’s currently rolling out in the US. The ecosystem combines vehicle, solar, home battery and the grid into a single, seamless energy system.

Tesla Energy is on a mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy with the launch of its Powershare energy storage and exchange system. Jim said: “We design and manufacture a fully integrated ecosystem for energy and transportation. Our products work together, through software, to maximise their impact.”

That will include everything from EV charging and battery technology, to robots, AI and even insurance products.

The technology supports bi-directional AC power flow, which sits at the core of V2G functionality. It doesn’t just suck energy from the grid; when connected, the vehicle can discharge back to it.

“Powershare’s functionality today charges electric appliances and loads; other EVs; and home back-up in the event of an outage,” Jim explained. The technology is about far more than simply powering up a vehicle battery.

Jumptech technology improves key parts of the process, such as use of data, to make bi-directional charging viable at scale. It’s a smarter use of electricity amid surging demand for power across the world.

Turning the home into an energy ecosystem

Charging vehicles will be responsible for 21% of renewable energy use; 35% will go towards making the grid more reliable, while 22% will power heat pumps.

“Powershare is a critical part of the solution in meeting this new demand,” said Jim. “It prevents transmission losses and bypasses network upgrade issues.”

Further benefits include protecting against home outages and weak points of the grid, while also maximising the use of intermittent renewables such as solar energy.

Tesla Energy is currently testing and optimising retail pricing of Powerwalls: residential batteries that form a virtual power plant in a domestic setting, for energy generation and storage. Users have access to software to optimise their energy use.

Cybertrucks, which are Powershare compatible, are the first vehicles in the ecosystem. The car can ‘speak to’ the grid directly. Tesla is planning to add its other models in the US. It has also set its sights on bringing the technology to the UK and the rest of the world as soon as possible.

Jumptech collaborates for global V2G

Tesla Energy says it can turn stationary storage into greater grid capacity, to become an important source of sustainable energy.

Jim commented: “Stationary storage is not deployed fast enough to match renewable generation additions to the grid. But we can leverage bi-directionality to accelerate grid storage capacity, and to complement stationary storage deployment.”
