Jumptech is supporting the V2G revolution, priming the EV charging network to scale up services across the UK in collaboration with industry partners across our vibrant sector. Share Link copied V2G installations come with a range of complex challenges, a theme covered by Chris Everitt, Partnerships Director at Radius Charge. Chris has seen it all in more than a decade of handling V2G installations. He gave the audience a behind-the-scenes view of what he jokingly called “the biggest V2G installation in the universe”. He also delved into the rapid development of technology which could be a game changer in years to come. Finding the right software partner is key A decade after its launch the company – which was originally called EV Charging Solutions – was acquired by Radius Charge to propel its mission to switch fleets of petrol and diesel commercial vehicles to electric power. The firm has also been involved in wider V2G installations, which Chris said had initially proved tricky – with even a single charger installation facing difficulties with manufacturer instructions and complex components. Installs have now become much simpler however, thanks to cutting-edge developments with the technology. Chris spoke about a major contract Radius Charge took on in 2022. It was a V2G installation for Nottingham City Council: 40 V2G chargers at one site, each with a 40-amp supply, including a mix of ground, wall-mounted and back-to-back units. Chris fired a warning shot: “Chargers are nothing without the right software. You can have lots of chargers, they might even be the world’s best. But without the right software to help V2G communication your project is dead in the water.” Managing suppliers is a key feature of Jumptech. The platform can iron out serious wrinkles in the procurement and installation process. Chris went on to describe issues with Radius Charge’s software partner which began to put the V2G warranty period into doubt. Managing V2G stakeholders with Jumptech The software issues were eventually solved. Chris and Radius Charge were able to reflect on “the biggest V2G installation in the universe”. He added: “Trial projects are not smooth journeys however innovative they are. As the installer you have supplied the equipment so you’re left holding the baby. You’re liable for anything that goes wrong. The good news is that the wider industry is appreciating this a bit more: we’re all on a learning curve.” Jumptech’s technology is key to smoother V2G installation. The platform helps installers organise multiple trades and contractors. We ensure the job is done on time, efficiently and with full compliance. Chris said: “Do your due diligence with every V2G job. Ask the question, can your software partner deliver if you win the tender? Because it’s your liability if you can’t.” Get ready for a future powered by V2G Chris closed by emphasising the need to stay up-to-date with regulations. DNO submissions are key to the process. These are put front and centre via automation through Jumptech’s platform. “Stay updated with compliance issues,” Chris advised. “As a V2G installer, you need to respect your DNO: it exists to protect the grid. Tell them what you’re installing and what it will generate – and give them the chance to accept that.” He concluded, “V2G has changed so much in just a few years. The weight and size of units and the time to install the technology has reduced significantly. What was once a three-man job can now sometimes be handled by a single installer. Keep on top of technological and compliance developments.” Jumptech exists to scale ecosystems quickly and efficiently as we continue to establish V2G as a sustainable energy solution that’s fit for the future.
